Job Summary
The Automotive Laboratory Technician Intern will support engineering testing for research, development, or certification of vehicles, products, sub-systems, components, or materials. This role is responsible for collecting data using specialized equipment, control software, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems. The Automotive Laboratory Technician Intern will also support diagnosis of the unit on test, and the complete experimental setup, to ensure operational efficiency and data quality. This is a paid internship opportunity and is located in Livonia, MI.
As an Automotive Laboratory Technician Intern, you will:
Assist with vehicle setup on various test rigs to support suspension development, BSR (Buzz, Squeak, and Rattle), and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) testing.
Execute test procedures, operating the rig and control software to collect high-quality data on vehicle performance
Perform preliminary data analysis and quality checks to ensure data integrity before delivery to engineering teams
Support regular maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of the test rigs and associated sensors/instrumentation
Maintain accurate records of test setups, test runs, maintenance, calibrations, and part changes
Work directly with engineers to achieve specific experimental conditions and support test planning
Assist with diagnosis and issue resolution for the test rig, control software, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems
Ensure compliance with ISO standards and internal quality procedures for calibration and data management
To be considered an Automotive Laboratory Technician Intern, you will need:
Enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical or automotive engineering
Available for 40+ hours per week M-F from May to August 2026
Experience in any of the following: mechanical engineering or fabrication
Good computer skills and flexibility to learn new skills
Good communication skills, written and verbal
Good customer service and organizational skills
Basic knowledge of automotive powertrain systems, fuel systems, components, or material properties
Ability to learn and follow detailed test procedures while recording data
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
A successful candidate may also have:
Experience testing vehicles, products, powertrains, engines, chassis components, or vehicle suspension systems
Experience operating an AB Dynamics SPMM 5000 K&C rig and Hunter wheel alignment machines
Good MS Office skills specifically with Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Experience with metal fabrication including welding and manual machining
Knowledge of common testing equipment and software used in vehicles, engine, fuel systems, components, products or material test environments
Experience using software packages including AB Dynamics control software, Mathworks Matlab or Siemens LMS TestLab
Ability to diagnose issues with experimental test setups, vehicle systems or test equipment
